In Dr. Mushlin's words
“Being a strong surgeon is more than being surgically skilled. It's about a balanced plan, aligned with the patient's goals. I listen closely.”

Dr. Mushlin is a board-certified neurosurgeon who has dedicated his career to the spine. He completed neurosurgical residency at the University of Maryland, where he also completed an enfolded complex spine fellowship. Drawn to the most demanding spinal cases, he then pursued additional fellowship training in complex spine and neurotrauma at the University of Pittsburgh.

Today he serves as Director of Spine Surgery and as an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery, where he also helps lead the training of the next generation of neurosurgeons.

“Dr. Mushlin gave me my life back at 69 years old. I was unable to stand or walk, but after a surgery that basically rebuilt my spine, I am walking over a mile and doing all the things I couldn’t for years. I am grateful and would recommend Dr. Mushlin and his staff to anybody.”

I was up and walking after spine surgery in two days — no real pain, only discomfort at the surgical site. Arguably the best back surgeon in the country.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral to see Dr. Mushlin?

Many insurance plans let you request an appointment directly, while some require a referral from your primary care doctor. Call the office at 631‑444‑1213 and we’ll help you check what your plan needs.

Do most spine problems require surgery?

No. Most spine conditions improve without surgery. Dr. Mushlin starts with the least invasive option that will work, and only recommends surgery when it is truly the right answer.

Yes — second opinions are welcome. Bring your imaging and any prior notes, and Dr. Mushlin will review every option, including non-surgical care.

What should I bring to my first visit?

Any recent spine imaging (MRI, CT, or X-ray) or a copy on disc, a list of your current medications, and a few notes on your symptoms and what you have already tried.

What conditions does Dr. Mushlin treat?

The full range of adult spine conditions — neck and back pain, herniated discs, sciatica, and spinal stenosis, through to complex deformity, spinal tumors, and trauma.

Where does Dr. Mushlin see patients?
